5 star wine from Burgundy specialist and Master of Wine, Jasper Morris. Crushed rocks, lemon barley water and lemon drops and hint of oats tossed in golden syrup and baked. There's fantastic weight here, and the finish is so mouth-watering and long. Those who look down on Vire-Clesse - think again! Will drink for decades to come.
Robin: There are only a few times in my life that I can recall having been moved and quite so excited when meeting a winemaker and tasting their wines for the first time. The wines of Guillemot-Michel age like very few white Burgundies. Jasper Morris MW reports in his reviews of Burgundy that following a tasting of 30 vintages of 'Quintaine' from Domaine Guillemot-Michel, that the 1999 and 2001 still taste very young! Morris sums up:" These are brilliant wines which work in so many different styles – refined, pure, complex, lush and botrytis-affected. This is what Viré-Clessé can offer, especially at the Clessé end and particularly Quintaine, when in the hands of master practitioners such as the Guillemot-Michel family, pioneers of biodynamics in the region. Congratulations to both generations – Pierrette and Marc, Sophie and Gautier. The domaine continues in excellent hands."
FROM THE PRESS
“A small and concentrated crop after frost damage. Clean fresh pale colour, the bouquet is almost cool, with very white fruit, becoming more and more beautifully perfumed as it opens out, ripe apples with a tiny suggestion of peach at the sides, and excellent acidity. This should be a long lasting and relatively lush example. Tasted: October 2021. 5 stars. ”Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“Notes of crisp green orchard fruit, oatmeal, clear honey, white flowers and mint introduce the 2019 Viré-Clessé Quintaine, a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine that's deep and sapid, framed by lively acids and chalky structuring dry extract. If the 2018 is open and demonstrative, the 2019 is built to age and will really reward some patience. 93+, drink 2025-2040.”William Kelley, Wine Advocate
