From his oldest vines of Sauvignon, between 40-60years old, planted on caillotes soil, a soft and rocky limestone typical in this area, south facing. Just 1300 bottles made too. It has the merest hint of enticing reduction, struck rock, lime peel and oat biscuits too, with the zesty aromatics and precision of Sauvignon grown on these soils. We tasted a 2014 on visiting and it was utterly fantastic.
We've found over the years that the wine producers who never get back to you are the best. And so it was with Stephane Cherrier......! Having heard exciting things about him, we made the major diversion on our trip to Burgundy in February 2022 to meet vigneron Stephane in person. What a brilliant decision that was. Located in the tiny village of Verdigny just northwest of Sancerre, he farms a scattering of hillside parcels totalling 13ha; 10 planted to Sauvignon and the remaining 3 to Pinot Noir on rocky Kimmeridgian limestone, organically too. As his father didn't bottle and instead sold the wine to other producers, Stephane is actually the one putting the name on the map. Stylistically, the domaine is about elegance, restrained power and making a lovely drink that blends beautifully with food, and ages superbly too.
