Tasting Notes

This is a wine to go with those rich creamy sauces. There’s plenty of body, but the fruit remains fresh and there’s that pure limestone tang along with a mild toasty spice, even creamy coconut, from the oak ageing. Some nice heady floral notes of acacia and chamomile. Altogether denser than Le Perrières but elegant all the while.

‘Sous la Velle’ (means ‘under the town’) is one of the warmer Buisson’s chardonnay sites in Saint-Romain. The vines here are among their oldest – on average 60 years old and going up to 90 years old. The western exposure and higher ratio of clay and marl to limestone here means the Sous la Velle chardonnay cuvée is probably the family’s richest and roundest. 10 to 20% new oak.

They are not too fat, too oleaginous or too forward, but dramatic, lustrous creatures with amazing firmness of acidity and joyous, layered fruit. The oak element in each is subtle and supportive, and at these prices they are all incredible value, too. Sous le Château is the fullest of the trio and La Perrière the most balletic, but I would urge you to buy all three – they show that, in warmer vintages, lesser-known villages tucked away in the Côte d’Or make far more scintillating wines than those that lounge around in the sun all day.”

Not a lot on the nose, just a little leafy, a finger trace of smoke. A bit more curve and expression on the palate, although still terribly introvert. Gunpowder and grapefruit. Elegant, layered, intense with a bit of an ice-maiden aloofness.”
