Tasting Notes

Just over 1000 bottles produced of this Stellenbosch Semillon that incorporates 30% skin contact for 10 days with stems and all, and 70% whole bunches pressed to old oak for fermentation and ageing. Lightly golden and really quite savoury, with a hint of orange on the nose, apple and spice, with white pepper too and dried orange rind spiked through it too. There's stem ginger on the palate and it's immensely vibrant too - textural and exotic, savoury, yet fresh too.

From the Platter Guide's Newcomer of the Year 2022, The Vineyard party is one of South Africa's most exciting new brands and micro-producers! Produced by Jolette Steyn, her maiden 2018 releases focus on two Semillons from the same Stellenbosch vineyard produced with some more unusual vinification techniques. Jolette seeks out sustainably farmed vineayards that prioritise biodiversity, and works with avant-garde, low intervention techniques in the cellar. Both unusually named wines come with wonderful stories behind them too. "I'm your Huckleberry" has two meanings: it is a phrase from a nineties Western, called Tombstone, and a particular scene where Val Kilmer's character shows up to a duel and delivers this line. It signifies acceptance of a challenge, saying 'I'm the one you're looking for'; 'Call me, I'll answer'; 'Tell me where, I'll show up/I'll be there', 'I'm it'. So, in part, it's a chat between Sémillon and herself, saying 'Let's do this, let's be there, let's show up!' It was also the name of a black Labrador whom Jolette loved dearly, and part of the team of her favourite and most influential harvest team in a small town called Lompoc in California.

“Paler than Here Be Dragons but still considerable gold in the colour. Not quite as spicy as Dragons, less resiny, but more tension and forward drive – arrow-like in its focus and breath-splitting intensity. An interesting adjacency of custard-apple silky vanilla-sweet creaminess with coruscatingly precise, citrus-spliced acidity. This pivots on needle point, showering the palate with glass slivers of green walnut, rosemary, dried-sage salt, greengage and lime. If ever a wine could pierce your heart, this would be it. Phenomenal depth and complexity for just 12%. And only just on the very cusp of its ascension. Very, very exciting wine. Jolette Steyn is a winemaker to watch. Mark my words. 17++”
Tamlyn Currin,
“Full yellow in colour. This has brightness and freshness, and also a bit of structure. There is a lovely chalky, green limey character here, with crystalline citrus fruit and a hint of green apple. Lovely freshness and presence on the palate with good acidity and a fine, spicy, nicely green twist on the finish. It’s fresh but textural with lots of detail and interest. This is a lovely expression of Semillon. 93/100”
Dr Jamie Goode, The Wine Anorak.
“The 2018 I'm Your Huckleberry is a pure, straw-colored Sémillon that is whole-bunch-pressed with 15 days of skin contact. The nose is resinous rather than fruit-driven and offers melted wax and lanolin. The spicy palate has a slightly bitter edge, an attractive waxy texture and flavors of Golden Delicious apple and tangerine peel mixed with stem ginger on the finish. If natural wine is your bag, you'll love this. I regard it as a well-made wine for its type. 90 points, drink 2021-2025”
