Tasting Notes

One of Adi's rare single vineyard wines, from a 1966 planting. Brooding on the nose, with plums, both fresh and cooked, tea leaves, scents of walking through a fruitcage, currants, leaves and all, with a gravelly mineral note and savoury mushroom and fynbos character too. With time open, there are prettier notes of lilac and summer pudding emerge on the nose carrying through to the palate. Good grip, but such finesse too, finishing long and meaty. A really exceptional expression of the grape, and what potential it has in the Swartland.

More Info

We firmly believe that Adi Badenhorst is the most exciting winemaker in South Africa. He is also the most frustrating. His laid back, self-deprecating, playful manner keeps you guessing and makes you wonder whether he has any idea what he is actually doing, whether he just chucks some grapes into a vat and hopes for the best, but we know full well that there is a huge amount of expertise that goes on behind closed doors, when no one is around to witness his skill and diligence ...and spoil his reputation!

FROM THE PRESS

“"Nebbiolo meets Shiraz," says Adi Badenhorst of Tinta Barocca, and it's not a bad description of the grape. Grippy, tannic and intense, with plenty of colour, wild herb intensity, racy acidity and notes of damson, rose petal, tar and blackberry. Gloriously chewy. Drink 2023-30, 93 points.”
