Tasting Notes

Platter’s Wine Guide 2022 - Newcomer Winery of the Year  "Cool, refreshing and yet firm with a spine. On a hot day, at a well-laden outdoor table, this would be heaven. It’s so much more substantial than most Sauvignons. Well made! Should develop well."Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com

More Info

From the Platter Guide's Newcomer of the Year 2022, The Vineyard party is one of South Africa's most exciting new micro-producers! Winemaker Jolette Steyn seeks out sustainably farmed vineyards that prioritise biodiversity, and works with avant-garde, low intervention techniques in the cellar. Both unusually named wines come with wonderful stories behind them too. "I'm your Huckleberry" has two meanings: it is a phrase from a nineties Western, called Tombstone, and a particular scene where Val Kilmer's character shows up to a duel and delivers this line. It signifies acceptance of a challenge, saying 'I'm the one you're looking for'; 'Call me, I'll answer'; 'Tell me where, I'll show up/I'll be there', 'I'm it'. So, in part, it's a chat between Sémillon and herself, saying 'Let's do this, let's be there, let's show up!' It was also the name of a black Labrador whom Jolette loved dearly, and part of the team of her favourite and most influential harvest team in a small town called Lompoc in California.

FROM THE PRESS

“Self-identifying as a wine geek and young-gun independent, Jolette Steyn has a CV that includes an MSc in Oenology (thesis topic: garnacha/grenache in Spain’s Priorat), 15 harvests on four continents, and wine- making at leading SA estates over a decade-plus. Equally impressive are the debut small-batch bottlings under this own-label, her goal being ‘to source biodiverse, sustainably farmed parcels while working with avant-garde techniques and applying low intervention in the cellar’. Both wines are from 18-year-old vines on the Helderberg, their names alluding to the acceptance of two different challenges: beginning a solo career (Huckleberry) and using both skin and stem contact on semillon for the first time (Dragons). The latter bottling receives the maximum rating, and its sibling a superb four-and-a-half stars (93 points on the 100 scale), and their performance on debut earn Jolette and her young venture not only our congratulations and best wishes for a continued stellar future, but also one of our highest accolades, Newcomer Winery of the Year.”
