Tasting Notes

Benoit says his aim with this wine was to create a ‘grand vin of Cahors’. This 2019 completely overturns Cahors (slightly outdated) reputation for producing ‘rustic’ reds – wines with rough tannins and edgy acidity. This one is a seamless beauty, starting from the hypnotising nose of softly spiced sweet blackberry and plum fruit, and the hints of old leather, tar and baking spice, carrying on to the nimble, juicy mid-palate, right through to the lip-smacking sweet-savoury finish. The tannins are like dusty chocolate, the oak perfectly integrated… drinking very well now (better decanted though), but with two or three years more bottle age this should blossom into something glorious.

More Info

Located in the western corner of Cahors in the village of Lacapelle-Cabanac, third generation winemaker Benoit Aymard took over the reins of his small and slightly dilpidated family domaine in 2014. He enjoys drinking Gamay and Loire reds, and it's this freshness and drinkability that guides his decisions at harvest and in the cellar. Thus, Benoit focuses on emphasising the beautiful fruit that Malbec can offer and moving away from the more austere or over extracted style Cahors and the grape is known for.
