Tasting Notes

23 varieties, one wine! Introducing Papegaai Dry red 2021, or as it's nicknamed on the farm, Papegaai Pansexual......  Think violets, blackcurrant cordial, crushed rocks and with crunchy cranberry accented acids. Serve chilled and gulp heartily. Rock on! When the young Badenhorst family settled on the Paardeberg, Adi had planned to make only one white and red. Then the bills and budgets came, that led to the birth of the trusty Secateurs range. Then the old vine vineyards were nurtured into something special that deserved due attention and so the single vineyard series were released. Now, as Adi approaches his half century, this new Papegaai is a nod towards the old dream of making just one wine - one that screams Adi Badenhorst and Kalmoesfontein! A blend from 23 young sites on the property, white and red, all picked over a couple of days and co-fermented.

More Info

We firmly believe that Adi Badenhorst is the most exciting winemaker in South Africa. He is also the most frustrating. His laid back, self-deprecating, playful manner keeps you guessing and makes you wonder whether he has any idea what he is actually doing, whether he just chucks some grapes into a vat and hopes for the best, but we know full well that there is a huge amount of expertise that goes on behind closed doors, when no one is around to witness his skill and diligence ...and spoil his reputation!

FROM THE PRESS

“It’s spot on as a light, refreshing red. The nose is extraordinarily fragrant with notes of cranberry, raspberry, flowers, fynbos, garden herbs and white pepper while the palate is not heavy but not feeble either (alcohol is 13%). With plenty of freshness and a nicely dry but not overly tannic finish, this is crazy more-ish. There’s even a feel-good factor with some of the proceeds given to the Cape Parrot Project.”
