Tasting Notes

A delicious Cru Bourgeois from the Medoc, next to Chateau La Lagune. The late Michael Broadbent MW, whose tasting notes of Bordeaux going back to the 19th century, loved the classic nature of this wine, while not being too heavy for regular drinking. This 2014 is  nicely mature and drinking beautifully, with concentrated blackcurrant fruit marrying wonderfully with a little hint of pencil lead and cedar wood spice. This is perfect for a special dinner and for those who appreciate decent Bordeaux yet do not want to spend a small fortune. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, matured in oak barriques (20% new) for 14 months.

More Info

Just up from St Estèphe and Pauillac, and next to Château La Lagune, on a good gravelly mound (the highest mound north of St Estèphe, and considered the best terroir for good Cabernet in Bordeaux). The estate might be extensive at 94 hectares but the quality and attention to detail is key to the family owners. The property dates back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest in the region. The wine is named after the tower in the vineyard (depicted on the label) which was once a lighthouse lighting up the estuary.

FROM THE PRESS

“The 2014 La Tour de By has a satisfactory graphite-tinged bouquet that is conservative and tightly wound, but opens nicely in the glass. The palate displays good body and fruit concentration on the entry, plenty of spicy black fruit laced with graphite, with impressive energy on the finish. This La Tour de By has turned out nicely and should drink well for 8-10 years.”
Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate, March 2017
