Tasting Notes

"This crazy-delicious wine" Tamlyn Currin - JancisRobinson.com. It's all about the fruit! This no added SO2 bottling is a blend of Alicante and Grenache. Positively summer pudding in a glass! Explosive fruit - berries and cherries and floral notes too, hints of orange zest and violets and tea soaked fruit. Don't be fooled by the wine's deep purple colour, it's juicy, fresh, with just a hint of herbs and light tannins.

More Info

Vigneron Frédéric Julien used to be Vice-President of the Cooperative Cellar of Rasteau and started his own domaine in 2017 in the village of Vaucluse. The estate takes its name from a part of the AOC called Gramiller – a terroir of many soils where they have 2.5 ha of vines. With 15 ha of vines spread across five lieu-dits, since his beginnings in vine growing some twenty years ago, Frédéric Julien has always been a big supporter of organic farming and a strong believer in the importance of  farming with nature, rather than against it. Frédéric's wines are very precise, with as little external input as possible: just a minimal dose of SO2 at bottling for the estate’s wines and nothing at all for the Cuvées Natures. It’s all about the fruit! His no added SO2 cuvees are a masterclass in purity and consistency, and would convince even the most staunch critic of natural wine.

FROM THE PRESS

“This crazy-delicious wine tastes like the Venn diagram intersection of cru Beaujolais, Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc and peppery, red-lilted Rhône Grenache. The tannins feel like jumping jacks: playful, surprising, fun, as cherry red as the fruit. It's such a happy, unpretentious wine and if we were going to be doing a big family Christmas dinner in the UK this year, this is the wine I'd buy. Because it's delicious; it will go with turkey, beef, goose, ham and damn well everything; the tannins are light enough not to shrivel up the mouths of tannin-sensitive palates but it has enough structure to appeal those who like oomph; the alcohol is refreshingly low but it comes with masses of fruit. And, when the seasonal bills are high, this is almost outrageously underpriced. And it's organic, so you're voting for the planet. And the label is cool. If I was writing a Top Christmas Wines column, this would be at the top. VGV (TC) ”
