Tasting Notes

Produced from the famed Kaaimansgat 700m above sea level, winemaker Jessica is a particular fan of the 2022 vintage. On the nose, there's dainty rose hips, lifted cocoa and the unique orange rind character imparted by the vineyard site. The palate boasts that fine Pinot weightlessness, combining power and grace, with red and black cherry fruit, umami notes, roasted chestnuts, with silky tannins and fresh acidity. A keen home cook, Jessica's favourite pairing with Nom Pinot is Tom Yum soup, citing how its salty savoury flavours long for the fruit of this Pinot!

More Info

Saurwein is Jessica's family name. Steeped in the history of the 17th century winemaking, her forefathers made 'sour' wine for the Emperor of Austria and it has been Jessica's vocation to redeem her family's reputation ever since! She produced just 3 barrels of her maiden vintage Nom Pinot from the celebrated Kaimansgaat vineyard, so-named for a forgotten African goddess of agriculture, and in just a few years, has added another Pinot and Riesling to the range. The future is looking very bright for Saurwein, with the announcement in August 2021 of a new home for them on a farm just outside Stanford, the imminent planting of a vineyard and full-scale regenerative agriculture project.

FROM THE PRESS

“Spicy, racy, pure and intense, with meaty tannins, layers of bramble, red berry and wild herbs and very fine tannins. A Pinot Noir producer to watch. 95 points. ”
Tim Atkin MW
“The 2022 Pinot Noir Saurwein Nom comes from vines located at around 700m in Elandskloof, contains 10% whole bunch and aged for 11 months in 25% new French oak, the rest 6th fill. This has a more opulent bouquet than the Om Pinot Noir, with Morello cherries, wild strawberry and light rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and very smooth in texture. However, there is certainly structure with a slightly saline finish. Delicious. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036.”
