Tasting Notes
If you have always struggled to find that truly ‘great’ fine wine, the wine which stops you firmly in your tracks and leaves you wanting more, to actually go and lay down some bottles, this is the wine that will make you do it. The 2019 Ombrone is a blend of Cabernet and Merlot yet it bypasses the typical and creates a wine far more special than most, whilst costing much less than many fine wines of the world. The first thing which hits you on the nose is the Ombrone’s plush layers of heady fruit - soft plums, blackberries and very gentle notes of cedar and ripe herbaceous notes wrapped in a serious graphite core. Such a graceful wine, the tannins are fine knit, with notes of crushed rocks and lavender and with amazing length. Vibrancy and persistence refreshes the palate, leaving you ready for the next sip.

It’s the almost obsessive attention to detail that sets Cupano apart. Before planting his land, Lionel carried up rocks from the Ombrone river bank to improve grounding and drainage. Each vine in the 7 hectares of vineyards was planted by his own hand, and his meticulous attention extends to pruning the individual bunches with nail-scissors! It is also completely organic and partly biodynamic. Although we have said it before, it’s worth a reminder: Lionel learned winemaking under the tutelage of the late Henri Jayer (of Vosne-Romanée), arguably the greatest and most influential winemaker of the 20th Century. They became close friends until Jayer died in 2006, and Lionel is committed to maintaining his friend's principles.
