Tasting Notes

It's always great to discover a new star, and Taaibosch is knocking it out of the park! It goes straight into the top tier of Cape Bordeaux blends. But it's the price that's so striking for the quality. It is an excellent buy. Neal Martin's tasting note on the 2020, which he rates a notch above the 2019, reads: "This beautifully defined bouquet offers perfumed black fruits laced with truffle and cedar, and a touch of mint surfacing with time"

From Neal Martin, Vinous.com "There was a point during my morning visit to Taaibosch when, after inspecting the winery and vineyards, we descended the Lower Helderberg Mountains in Shalk-Willem Joubert’s jeep, and I enquired about the price of his wine in the United States? “Between $40 and $50 a bottle,” he answers. I almost laugh at the absurdity of price, perhaps because I am so accustomed to the stratospheric prices found across Burgundy and Bordeaux. “Incredible,” I reply. “Frankly, I was expecting another zero on the end.” Joubert made his name at Rupert & Rothschild for a number of years until he sought a new goal in life. He virtually gave up what would have been a comfortable rest of his career when he found investors and bought the site that had previously made one of South Africa’s most coveted wines, Cordoba. Renaming the Cabernet Franc-based cuvée “Crescendo”, I tasted the maiden 2018 last year in the UK and that was good enough to prompt a visit to the estate 12 months later. Judicious use of French barriques and clever use of foudres and cement, that latter adding brightness to the wine according to Joubert, means that this is not a powerful, overwrought Bordeaux-inspired blend, but rather a wine that exudes finesse and site expression. The sophomore 2019 is a fabulous follow-up and represents incredible value in today’s inflationary market"

FROM THE PRESS

“The Cabernet Franc seems to be more forward than the 2019, but as Joubert suggests, the wine is a little more generous, the tannins a little broader and lush. Pencils and raspberries and wild plums. A touch of sweet spice on the end. Competent and rewarding.”
Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com
“The 2020 Crescendo is the third release from Taaibosch, a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot. It is matured 13 months in 225-liter barriques (30% new) and then a further 12 months, 75% in foudres and 25% in cement. This beautifully defined bouquet offers perfumed black fruit laced with truffle and cedar, a touch of wild mint surfacing with time. The medium-bodied palate has more pliant tannins than the first two vintages, perhaps with a little more flesh and less austerity towards the finish that delivers slightly savory black fruit layers. Certainly, this represents one of the Cape's finest expressions of Cabernet Franc. Highly recommended.”
