Tasting Notes
Alberto Orte's Vara y Pulgar, or stick & thumb, describes the training system for vines commonly used in Jerez, giving a not so subtle nod to this wines heritage. Like his grand Atlantida, this is again 100% Tintilla, one of the rarest red varietals in Spain. The Vara Y Pulgar sees a little less oak than its big Brother Altantida, but the same overall maturation period of 18 months, split between oak and concrete. Tintilla thrives in this Jerez's Albariza soils, imparting a mineral edge to the wine. Pure rich dark fruit and blueberries, with a perfumed, deep floral note. The palate is concentrated and pure, the tannins soft and textured and the finish is extremely generous. What a cracking red and testament to Alberto's craft.
More Info
A titan of the Spanish wine industry - introducing Alberto Orte! Oh, where to begin. He’s the guy, at the tender age of 24, who co-founded renowned US based Spanish specialist wine importer, Olé & Obrigado. A farmer, producer and historian all in one, he’s dedicated a huge portion of his life to exploring, identifying and preserving old varieties and clones, and has successfully identified a whopping 200+ old clones of Palomino Fino and Palomino Jerez and revived and re-planted over 20 grape varieties on the brink of extinction. As well as his projects in Jerez, Alberto also makes wine from extraordinary sites in Yecla, Rioja and as we have here, Valdeorras.
