Tasting Notes

From a dry-farmed site on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge-granite soils with a good proportion of clay. Dense with red berry fruit - tiny wild strawberries, red and black cherries, plums and exotic spices which carry through to the palate with hints of hibiscus and gentle meaty note. The palate is dense with fruit, with velvety tannins, crisp acidity and long finish. Will age with grace.

More Info

Saurwein is Jessica's family name. Steeped in the history of the 17th century winemaking, her forefathers made 'sour' wine for the Emperor of Austria and it has been Jessica's vocation to redeem her family's reputation ever since! She produced just 3 barrels of her maiden vintage Nom Pinot from the celebrated Kaimansgaat vineyard, so-named for a forgotten African goddess of agriculture, and in just a few years, has added another Pinot and Riesling to the range. The future is looking very bright for Saurwein, with the announcement in August 2021 of a new home for them on a farm just outside Stanford, the imminent planting of a vineyard and full-scale regenerative agriculture project.

FROM THE PRESS

“Alluring aromatics of red cherry and wild strawberry plus hints of fynbos, cured meat and white pepper. Good fruit expression, well integrated acidity and fine tannins – relatively low in alcohol (13.3%) but not entirely without weight or texture, the finish gently savoury. Understated and slow to reveal itself.”
