Tasting Notes

The 2021 Salt River combines fruit from a 32 year old bushvine vineyard in Stellenbosch and another coastal site in Walker Bay. We loved the 2020, and the 2021 is EVEN BETTER! Named for the trendy area of Cape Town that Savage Wines calls home, it drinks more like a Pouilly Fume than a Marlborough Sauvignon, with a real lushness to the palate, flavours of yellow plums, semi-dried pineapple, moringa flowers, a tiny hint of reduction and this amazing intense tanginess. Think sun-ripened yellow peppers blended up, with grapefruit pith and the faintest hint of blackcurrant. Terrific body and stunningly long in the mouth, it's tasting great now, and we're sure it will age with grace too.

More Info

We've waited extremely patiently for Duncan to make a straight Sauvignon Blanc. 2020 was the first release, and the only issue was how little was produced. We're happy to say that's been rectified with the knockout 2021! Duncan Savage is the most awarded winemaker in South Africa for the Sauvignon Blanc (and Semillon) variety.  He's also regarded by peers as the best there is with the grape. Even Eben Sadie shares this view.  He learned from the legend, Didier Dagueneau, who took Pouilly-Fume to new heights, and honed his techniques at Cape Point, for whom he made Platter 5-star wine after Platter five-star wine, and which he left in 2016 to concentrate on his own range, Savage Wines. They are now one of the most sought after wines in South Africa.

FROM THE PRESS

“Salty, smoky and so classy. The pineapple plushness is balanced by the bite of pale-yellow grapefruit-peel bitterness and fragrant oiliness, giving it body, weight and an intriguing saponaceous texture. Bitter almonds and paper-tree bark. Unusual, sophisticated Sauvignon. ”
Tamlyn Currin, Jancisrobinson.com
“The wine shows a wonderfully expressive textural balance with attractive aromatics of honey suckle, green pear, camomile iced tea, pineapple pastille and crunchy white peaches. The palate is soft, fresh and seamless with a caressing mouthfeel, tangy tangerine citrus acids, notes of white peaches, yellow grapefruit and pithy, stony mineral tannins. Another beautiful creation that benefits from being open and given plenty of air. Drink this delicious Sauvignon Blanc on release but don’t be shy to age a few sneaky bottles for 3 to 5 years. 93+ ”
