Mega gorgeous, deep, luscious, amazing bottle of wine from Callum Powell, who worked at J.L.Chave in Hermitage, having worked with his Dad, who made Torbreck, one of Australia’s greatest reds. Drink with big meats that have been barbequed, or venison, and then with hard cheese.  Tiny quantities imported. Total production 164 cases.

More Info

Callum Powell has learnt from the best when it comes to Syrah. He practically grew up at the powerhouse that is Torbreck, the Barossa winery his father co-founded. He went on to make wine with his dad under the label Powell & Sons working with prime Barossa sites which gained him much international attention. But he cites the year at Jean-Louis Chave in the Northern Rhone, one of THE top producers of Hermitage and St Joseph as the most formative in honing and learning his craft. It's here that he began to understand the true provenance and terroir through the diversity of the 7 different lieux-dits that Chave farms.Influenced by Chave, Callum opted to name his wines after the towns from which the fruit is sourced. Please note! These are not Torbreck-styled over-oaked power houses - these are lithe, pure, and unadulterated wines without the heavy oak influence that the region is known for. There's a certain sinew to them and a nervy youth and chalkiness to the tannins. The feedback so far from just a few sommeliers has been out of this world and with some blinding recent reviews from the Wine Advocate, we're thrilled to have these wines available.

FROM THE PRESS

“ The 2021 Ebenzer Shiraz is aromatically bursting with cassis, blackberry pie, salted licorice and cocoa dust. There is blueberry coulis, too. In the mouth, the wine is unfettered, supple and elegant, and the tannins are wrapped around a core of pure fruit. It is crystalline, in a way. Chalky and shapely. Very, very good.”
The Wine Advocate
“Beetroot, tobacco, liquorice and leather nose. The palate is dense and with chewy tannins – powerful, rich leather, fruitcake and quite incredible concentration too. Dense structure on the palate and a rich finish. Texturally superb as well. Will age beautifully. Classy stuff. (AC)”
Alistair Cooper MW, jancisrobinson.com
“Black as night in the glass. This single vineyard 2021 Shiraz Ebenezer is another cutting-edge Barossa wine. Whole bunches add a new dimension. It opened up after a couple of days to reveal cola, dark cherry, vanilla bean, star anise and roasted meat aromas, all tightly coiled. Excellent mouthfeel and flavor density follow, with a fresh acid bite and chewy tannins. Its structure is in the driving seat now, but its outstanding length and smoky graphite finish suggest that this wine will blossom beautifully over the coming years.”
