A leading light of South Africa’s New Wave and champion of old-vine Chenin, among others. From Chris’s cellar in Hemel-en-Aarde Franco has made some serious wines. I mean, these are impressive bottlings by any standard – powerful, concentrated, yet supremely elegant and finely detailed.

“Grapes from a Piekenierskloof vineyard approximately 25 years old. 25% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 10 months in older 500-litre barrels. Cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate, fynbos, earth and white pepper on the nose while the palate is full but balanced – pleasingly ripe fruit, bright acidity and densely packed tannins. Concentrated with a dry finish. 93 points.”
