Tasting Notes

Made from vines directly next to Pouilly-Fume vines. The refreshing, cooling, palate is delicious, with so much length for a wine at this price. It has a good dose of fruit too - pineapple, and grassy notes too, just a little of that gun-flint smokiness, that we like so much about wines from this region. The palate shines like diamonds. It's shimmering with sparks of citrus, but then kept in check by that terroir that again brings you back to classic Fumé that comes from the chalky and slightly flinty soils here. This is just the kind of wine you'd hope to find on a visit to Whitstable Bay Oyster Fishery, or at a place in St Malo overlooking Mont St Michel with a plateau de fruits de mer.

More Info

Made by David Maudry, in Tracy-Sur-Loire, from vines directly next to his Pouilly-Fume vines. It's not what you'd call de-classified Pouilly-Fumé, but perhaps a Pouilly-Fumé that was never classified...That is why this wine is called 'A peu pres', which means almost, or nearly, or, in very old French, 'as good as'.I tried it alongside their Pouilly-Fume and it was almost identical.

FROM THE PRESS

“The 2022 Sauvignon À Peu Près with its jaunty label and immaculate winemaking looks and tastes far better than a lowly Val de Loire IGP should. Produced by David and Shirley Maudry in the heart of the Loire Valley from 100 per cent Sauvignon Blanc, it would be a far grander Pouilly Fumé if only its vineyards were mere yards in one direction or another. Balanced and rounded with typical gooseberry, cut grass and zingy citrus fruit, it’s an absolute delight and would fool many a PF or Sancerre lover. Mrs Ray said she would happily drink the whole bottle and, dear reader, jolly nearly did. ”
