'Support the embattled producers of South Africa - try some of these wonderful wines. ... South Africa's wine producers have had a harder time than most. Last week, president Cyril Ramaphosa imposed a ban on domestic sales of alcohol - the second in South Africa this year - as part of a series of measured designed to help control Coronavirus. Even before this development, industry body VinPro had estimated that 18,000 jobs would go and nearly 80 wineries and 350 wine grape producers would close their businesses in the next year. The announcement bought many to the brink of despair.
South Africa makes some beautiful wines, and many are good value, particularly those above £8 a bottle and stretching into the fine wine £50 arena, where you can find fluid pinot noirs and beautiful chardonnay's. You don't need to seek out the worst affected producers in order to support an industry that is estimated to employ, directly and indirectly, around one million people.'
