Tasting Notes
This wine never ceases to amaze. Marie Madeleine, the owner, along with her brother, sent us a bottle of vintage 2023 last week. I uncorked it the same evening. I reckon it's as complex as it's even been. These notes develop both on the nose and palate and the palate with its lovely freshness, balancing out the intensity, fills out with a gorgeous texture, and beautiful flavours of red and dark fruits intermingled with the lightest of oak but present and delicious, nonetheless, and hints of the forest woods. Drinking now, and opens up with aeration - but so easy to love now. I've been enjoying it so much. Although it will be better still in 2 to 4 years. I don't think you will find this quality that often at this price. More likely to be £35, plus.
More Info
Burgundy of this quality and price doesn't come around often. It is from a vineyard in the area of Ladoix – just to the north of Beaune and across the road from the hill of Corton. We first discovered this wine dining at a local restaurant, and quickly became smitten. For the first few years of working with them, we struggled to get enough of an allocation. But we kept knocking on the door every January, asking how the latest vintage was looking and whether they had any for us. What inspired our persistence? Several things, but perhaps foremost is that they treat their most basic village wines with the same care and attention as their Grand Cru offerings. In a world where Burgundy reaches astronomical prices, it’s reassuring that you can still get exceptional quality at the entry level.
