Planted in 2005 on the steep mid-slopes of the Helderberg mountain in rich red clay loam soils, Steepside is bathed in sunshine from early each morning. Beautifully perfumed with bright red fruits, spiced mulberries and pretty violets matched with a sappy earthiness. The palate has an amazing and vivid lift to the fruit, and fine woven tannins, finishing with just a little wood spice and sandalwood.
Keermont Estate may well take the prize for most beautiful vineyards and views in all of South Africa. And yup, there's some pretty stiff competition! Nestled in a natural amphitheatre between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, their ambition is to produce wines that reflect the natural wonders of this exquisite place. At the helm is the highly talented Alex Starey, a winemaker much revered by his peers and Neal Martin.
FROM THE PRESS
“Steepside faces north and east and is situated at 300 metres on granite and clay loam soils. The result in 2017, that exceptional Cape vintage, is a world-class Syrah from Alex Starey, with a combination of violet and pine aromas, fine-boned tannins, subtle oak and bramble and black cherry fruit. Vibrant and energetic. 96 points. Drink 2024-35”Tim Atkin MW
“Deep crimson. Aroma is more intense and a little more floral than on the Topside Syrah 2017. Finely complex Syrah nose of dark fruits, pepper, violets and sweet spice. Firmly but smoothly tannic. Deep and long with a hint of smoked meat on the finish. ”Julia Harding MW, Jancisrobinson.com
