Tasting Notes

The wine that built Kumeu River's reputation, produced from 6 vineyards. Toasted pine nuts, intense lemon oil, grain store aromas matched with greek yoghurt and cooked apple. The texture on the palate is beautiful and it really builds in the mouth, with just the right amount of edginess to the acidity. Owner Michael remarked that the 2020 was the best vintage they've ever made. Yet this is right up there too! It's just glorious. A team member had an '05 in the summer of '22 which was absolutely singing. Drink now or hold. Vinous says until 2027, but we'd say longer.

More Info

"If you have never tried these wines, then it is time you see for yourself what New Zealand is capable." Neal Martin, Vinous. Kumeu River is considered unanimously to be New Zealand's top Chardonnay producer, and having sold their wines on and off for over 15 years, we are over the moon to have secured a parcel of their outstanding 2020s. Estabalished in the 50s just 20kms north of Auckland, for several decades now the Brajkovich family have fashioned Burgundy-inspired wines that rival their finest old world counterparts - silky, complex, tantalising wines that have gained the favour of just about every wine journalist and MW worth their salt.

FROM THE PRESS

“Smoky, tense and lively on the nose. Very fine and open. Slight smokiness on the palate also. Great balance. (2006 and 2007 are still looking good in 2022 apparently.) A fair copy of a fine Chassagne! Good value.”
Jancis Robinson MW
“This is a terrific wine and one that sums up the history, determination and high standards of this estate and the family who have worked so hard to build its reputation. It is the pick of the line-up if you are after a forward-drinking but grand-feeling wine (hence my earlier mention of inevitable stock pressure). The stunning nose and raspy finish bookend silky, layered, kindly fruit, making it a joy to taste. It also has enough acidity to build over time, and this wins it a ‘+’, too. 18+/20”
