From 60 year old vines on limestone soils, this is bone dry and with quivering lemon sherbet energy. Steely nose with hint of white flower, the fruit is concentrated yet it is the mineral - almost smokey - structure that leads the way. Very long and precise. This is a brilliant buy, as you’re getting top notch Riesling for a pretty sensible price. Compared to Burgundy this quality is excellent value.
Charles Sparr was put on to us by the Buisson brothers as well as Antoine Gouffier of Domaine du Bouchot. Sparr was one of the big names of Alsace. The brand was sold a few years ago, but the young Charles Sparr clung on to the best vineyards of his family’s estate, and with his wife, Amélie, is making some outstanding wines from them. They're not only organic, but Demeter certified biodynamic too, just like the Buissons and Antoine.
FROM THE PRESS
“Spice, broom flowers, pear skin. Piercing bitter orange and tart citrus. Pear-skin graininess in both texture and flavour with a very faint, underlying edge of petrol/TDN minerality/smokiness. Javelin-force directness and forward drive – this throws a powerful line. And yet the florals are there too, dancing, just out of reach.”Tam Currin, Jancisrobinson.com
