Tasting Notes
"Have just this evening opened up the Rosso No.1 and it's just fabulous. Super wine. Thanks so much" Duncan O, June '23 A Tuscan masterpiece. This is the first time Toby has produced a single vintage Rosso in some years, and we can see why - the quality is fantastic. It's got the highest proportion yet of Sangiovese in the blend, in an effort to taste more like a classical Tuscan, and is much finer, but with the trademark smoothness of Toby's wines. Toby has been working with Paolo Salvi, protegé of the late Giuilio Gambeli, a legend who was involved with some of the great Sangiovese of Tuscany (Pergole Torte, Soldera, Cupano), and is regarded by quite a few as the best consultant of Sangiovese. I would agree and can think of several highly known Chianti Classico that sell for £25 to £35+ that are not a patch on Toby's brilliant Rosso No 1.

Coste del Vivo is the personal project of winemaker Toby Owen. 20 years ago, he was manager of a wine shop in Scotland, dreaming of one day being able to make wine like the best of those he sold. In 2009 a chance meeting led to experience working with Brunello producer San Polino in Montalcino. Later, in 2012 he returned to Montalcino as winemaking assistant at Casa Raia. By the following vintage he was winemaker for micro-producer Hortulanus in the beautiful vineyards of Seggiano on Monte Amiata, and it's here he began producing his own range of fabulous wines.
