Part of the original Constantia Estate, founded by Simon van der Stel, first governor of the Cape, Buitenverwachting has been through the mill over the years, changing hands like loose change until it was finally bought by the Mueller family in 1980. Since then this 150-hectare farm has gone from strength to strength.
With mature vineyards planted on decomposed granite soils at the foot of the Constantiaberg, with plentiful sun and a cooling oceanic influence, the terroir here is ideal for producing the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and red Bordeaux varieties in which Buitenverwachting specialises. These are wines that combine concentration and freshness in an expressive, layered South African style perfected by winemaker Brad Paton. The quality to value ratio of these wines is incredible, and for all the brouhaha around South Africa’s New Wave, this is an old-school South African producer that hits all the right notes, with whom we’re immensely proud to be working.
