Young vigneron William Waterkeyn joined the domaine in 2015 and has since overseen huge change in the vineyards and cellar. Since his first vintage, he has facilitated the conversion to organic viticuture, the planting of more vineyards, and moving to a lower intervention approach in the cellar. Domaine Jessiaume is located in the village of Santenay, with 10ha under vine in the village, as well as premieur cru and village parcels in Beaune, Pommard, Volnay and Auxey-Duresses. I spent a very happy 40 minutes speaking to young vigneron William Waterkeyn on Tuesday, who, with his gentle smile, spoke of the joy of seeing how well the vines have responded to organic viticulture since they commenced conversion in 2016. To seeing worms in the soil, and biodiversity flourishing again, and at the prospect of the 2020 harvest too. Prior to Domaine Jessiaume, William worked as assistant winemaker at Maison Alex Gambal in Beaune, as well as working a long stint in Oregon and the Northern Rhone. He is also dear friends with Fred Buisson of Domaine Buisson, another superb domaine we are so fortunate to import.
