Domaine Philippe Germain

As Burgundy gets hotter, and picking times regularly have come forward to August, from early September, from what used to be October, the word is that the wines of the Haute Cotes de Beaune, due to their elevation, are ones to watch.

We first read about Domaine Philippe Germain after some excellent coverage in Jasper Morris MW's Inside Burgundy. Philippe switched a high-flying career in insurance in Paris for taking over his family domaine in the village of Nantoux, a stone's throw from Meursault. The estate has grown under his stewardship, taking their vineyard holdings to 13ha in 6 villages across the Cote de Beaune, with some of their vineyards literally just round the hillside from Volnay and Pommard. In 2008, Philippe was joined by his nephew Maxime Champaud as winemaker, who we met in early 2022, first in Paris and once at the domaine, where we enjoyed a super barrel tasting. This is a domaine very much on the up, but with some lovely wines already in bottle.

They are HVE certified - or Haute Valeur Environmentale - an alternate environmental certification to organics centred on the principles of agroecology. Zero use of herbicide or insecticide, the adoption of low impact techniques and great importance placed on improving soil health, its water and CO2 holding capacity, and improving biodiversity in all areas.
