La Calcinara

Decanter’s MUST TRY Rose 'A Super Rosato that boasts a ton of flavour' Ian D'Agata, Vinous

Located in the Marche, on the eastern coast of Italy, La Calcinara is now in the hands of the high-spirited and talented Berluti siblings, Paolo and Eleonora.

Spend one evening with Paolo and Eleonora, and be prepared to forever be enthralled by them and their wines. Their grandfather set up the estate with the sole purpose to produce tip top Montepulciano. With both children fascinated by wine, they both chose to study viticulture and oenology before heading off abroad, gaining valuable experience in different cellars and vineyards in Chile and New Zealand. Returning home, they set out to define the family business on their own terms - choosing to marry the region's traditions and the lessons learned on their travels to produce a range of wines we found it hard to ignore.

The sibling duo have a rare charisma and warmth that's almost impossible to not be drawn in by, and that certainly transmits in their wines. They're the sorts of cool kids with a natural flair for almost everything they do, from winemaking to art to music. Their energy is incredibly infectious, as is their love and commitment to producing wines that speak of their little corner of Conero - the limestone and volcanic 'tuff soils' the scent of the sea and the woods. Farming is organic and regenerative, and in the cellar, they think less about winemaking conventions and more about what they themselves love to drink, producing joyful, honest wines, with minimal intervention.
