Tasting Notes

95 points, Decanter - 95 points, Tim Atkin '95 points – Thief in the Night comes from two parcels between 600 and 680 metres on Billie and Erasmus van Zyl’s farm in Piekenierskloof and is typically graceful Grenache from a winemaker with the lightest of touches. Fermented and aged in concrete eggs and foudres, it has layers of Campari spices, blood orange and red cherry and some clove spice from 10% whole clusters. Drink 2026-2032.' More Info

Duncan Savage is at the top of his game and these 2023s showcase what South Africa is capable of. To pinpoint one word for these wines it would be purity. Within the wine trade there are few more sought after wines from the New World, and for the price, it represents truly outstanding value.

FROM THE PRESS

“The Savage Wines 2023 Grenache Thief in the Night is blended with 11% Cinsault from a vineyard across the road from the Grenache. Fruit is picked slightly riper at this bush-vine vineyard on sandstone soils at 650 meters above sea level. Both varietals have a small percentage of whole cluster, and the wine is quite fragrant with rose hip tea, blue fruits, plum and spice. The idea is not to force too much extraction, and aging is done in egg and large-format oak. I love those end notes of spice and violets.”
94pts, Monica Larner, Parker's Wine Advocate
“Hewn from sandstone-planted bush vines at 704m above sea level, the character of the soils and the significant diurnal shifts create a light-filled ripeness. Sweet black fruit and violet highlights contrast with meaty undertones and a soft, gossamer acidity. Generous, ripe tannins tailor to a dry yet fruit-packed finish. Gently handled, the wine was spontaneously fermented in a mix of conical foudres and open-top fermenters with some whole bunch. Maturation in concrete eggs and older 500-litre barrels.”
