'Sciornaia' translates to 'silly' or 'goofy', which is a nod to the fact that these guys hail from a village of around 150 inhabitants. This is beautiful Sangiovese, with characterful notes of red cherry, tobacco and spice. 16/20 from Jancis Robinson, a lot of fun for the money.

A project to save the tiny village of San Giovanni delle Contee in Tuscany from becoming a ghost town. This formidable group of three ran amok here as children visiting their grandparents and now, all grown up, are sad to see that so many young people have moved away to the cities. To bring back a traditional industry and attract more people to the village the ex-marketing director of Castellare di Castellina, the agronomist of Fonterenza and Pieve Santa Restituta, and the owner of Osteria Maccale got themselves together to create a new winery and they named it Cantina del Rospo. This is not a project to make money, but to bring some pride back to the locals and show people it’s not all about Brunello, which of course is where the money has been poured into. There’s now a festival each year in this tiny village, attended by top winemakers and some journalists.
