Tasting Notes

"A small vineyard of Nebbiolo with South-Eastern exposure, in the town of Roddi adjacent to Verduno and right behind Monvigliero. A vineyard partly planted by me in 2017 and partly back in 1961 on laminated soils of St. Agatha fossils with sand, chalk and molybdenum. It has always been vinified separately and then blended because it is obstinately different. More airy and multifaceted, complex in its elegance, always clearand defined. It is a vineyard whose uniqueness has been proven in time. Therefore I have chosen to bottle it as a testimony to the terroir that I love and feel so close to my discoveries."

More Info

In Piedmont, Gian Luca Colombo is the guy that everyone talks about. The architect of the neo-classical style of Barolo focusing on wines with real finesse: silky, elegant, perfumed, fine fruit, with gentler tannins, less wood and extraction. Colombo is the guy that everyone wants advice from. He won the Gambelli award for best young winemaker in Italy, and he works alongside a winemaker who is a consultant in Barbaresco, who makes the wine at esteemed Bruno Giacosa. They taste together, and talk together. The point is here is, that anything exciting happening in Barolo and Barbaresco, Gian Luca is probably aware of, and likely to be involved with. Gian Luca has a very small production of his own, and we are thrilled to have our hands on these wines.

FROM THE PRESS

“A one-off selection in 2022, Meretto is crafted from a plot of 70-plus-year-old vines in Verduno near the revered Monvigliero MGA. It emerges with striking intensity of strawberry, rosehip, sage and pink peppercorn. The palate is equally penetrating. There's almost a sweetness to the tannins as they meld seamlessly into the concentrated crisp forest berries. Taut but approachable, and worth seeking out. It sees a 30-day submerged cap maceration with ageing in 25-hectolitre Austrian oak.”
