Tasting Notes

We picked Chateau La Cardonne out of a tasting of around 60 Cru Bourgeois 2023s as our favourite. We contacted the Chateau and it turned out they had some stunning older vintages. We started off with excellent 2019 and have now just received the delicious 2022. It's classical in style - subtle, a beautiful drink with finesse and freshness, yet also with a gorgeous richness to it. The 2022 vintage was a little warmer which comes through in the juicy, ripe cabernet fruit. Fine and sophisticated yet vibrant and expressive. We love this style of Bordeaux.

More Info

"For a small estate up in the northern reaches of the Médoc vineyard, Château la Cardonne sure knows how to make an impression." Bordeaux expert, Jane Anson.

The most high of the gravel mounds in Bordeaux, and formerly owned by Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. When they were selling, a customer who liked the wine so much bought it from them. The winemaker of Lafite came with him, and subsequently they've had the former winemaker of Chateau Lynch-Bages, until vintage 2025. Soon, another Bordeaux winemaking luminary will be joining them to oversee vintage 2026, onwards. It speaks volumes for the terroir and vision of this Chateau that these top winemakers have wanted to work here.

FROM THE PRESS

“As you would expect in these higher reaches of the Médoc, 2022 is a great vintage, full of tannic richness and power softened by cocoa bean, liquorice root, olive pit and sandalwood. Closed right now but structured and with promise. Excellent. Magali Guyon technical director. 50% new oak for ageing. Stephane Courreges consultant.”
94pts, Jane Anson, Bordeaux Insider
“Very deep crimson. Lifted aroma of cassis and violets, both deep and expressive. Savoury, dark and such elegant fruit flavours along with silky tannins. The refinement of Bordeaux is so clear to see. Firm, dry, smooth tannins holding the fruit in check for the moment. Could be GV. ”
16.5/20, Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com
