Tasting Notes

A gentle rosy hue in the glass, this has a bewitching nose laden with red and black berries: both fresh, and mixed berry coulis with some raspberry leaf tea and bergamot. On the palate, so many of the flavours are subtle, and yet all add an extra dimension to the wine: ras-al-hanout, goji berries, green coffee bean, lavender, pumice stone, salty liquorice and meat juices, with very fine tannins and incredible length. Reviewing my tasting notes of the last three vintages of this wine, there is a consistent grace to the wine - an innate glossiness to the fruit, and a palate that floats across the mouth. So accessible as it's just so pretty when young, and yet with such a future ahead of it too.

More Info

We firmly believe that Adi Badenhorst is the most exciting winemaker in South Africa. He is also the most frustrating. His laid back, self-deprecating, playful manner keeps you guessing and makes you wonder whether he has any idea what he is actually doing, whether he just chucks some grapes into a vat and hopes for the best, but we know full well that there is a huge amount of expertise that goes on behind closed doors, when no one is around to witness his skill and diligence ...and spoil his reputation!

FROM THE PRESS

“This precious wine comes from a special site with heritage vines planted in 1952. The A. A. Badenhorst Family Wines 2023 Swartland Raaigras Grenache is a limited production of 2,500 bottles. It opens to a light appearance with ruby shine followed by aromas of dried raspberry, wild cherry, rose hip, bitter almond, spice box and cumin. You could pull out many descriptors to describe the wine's shifting and fluid aromatic layers. It closes with silky, lean-bodied intensity and a lasting spot of crushed white peppercorn.”
93pts, Monica Larner, Parker's Wine Advocate
