Tasting Notes

Old vines in the area of Barolo. 86 years old in one plot of Magliano Alfieri, località San Bernardo, 290m, and 45 - 80 year old vines in Roddi 200-250m. Super gorgeous. It's just so beautiful to drink now. Fuller in aroma and fruit, but so together. Not richly wooded as some are. This is probably the best Barbera I've ever had. Drink this now!

More Info

Magliano Alfieri, località San Bernardo, 290 mt. a.s.l., Roddi 200-250 mt a.s.l. Age of the vines: Magliano Alfieri 86 years old; Roddi: 45-80 years old. Harvest time: Last 10 days of September - First 10 days of October Winemaking:  Maceration for 22 to 40 days with controlled temperatures. Aging: 100% in big Austrian barrels sometimes aged in terracotta. Bottling after approximately 12-14 months. In Piedmont, Gian Luca Colombo is the guy that everyone talks about. The architect of the neo-classical style of Barolo focusing on wines with real finesse: silky, elegant, perfumed, fine fruit, with gentler tannins, less wood and extraction, Colombo is the guy that everyone wants advice from. He won the Gambelli award for best young winemaker in Italy, and he works alongside a winemaker who is a consultant in Barbaresco, who makes the wine at esteemed Bruno Giacosa. They taste together, and talk together. The point is here is, that anything exciting happening in Barolo and Barbaresco, Gian Luca is probably aware of, and likely to be involved with. Gian Luca has a very small production of his own, and we are thrilled to have our hands on these wines.

FROM THE PRESS

“Nice energy here, again. Bright and linear with juicy redcurrant and raspberry fruit with a hint of aniseed. Good structure under the vibrant fruit. Very fine.”
94pts, Jamie Goode
“I reckon Gian Luca Colombo makes the best Barbera in the Langhe. This has the sumptuous velvetiness of a Central Otago Pinot Noir, with hedonistic black plum and dark cherry jam fruit, but also a firm, counterbalancing line of freshness through the middle and sweet, pliable tannins. Utterly beguiling and seamless, the fruit comes from the northeastern edge of the Barolo region, vinified and aged mostly in large casks with no new wood. Drink 2025 - 2029. ”
