Tasting Notes

A beauty from start to finish. This is the baby from legendary producer Lopez de Heredia, but it stands tall next to far more expensive wines. What this Crianza gives for the price is jaw-dropping. The 2016 vintage is rated as ‘Very Good’ by the DOC Rioja Board, I should say so! There is so much to enjoy here. Already 8 years old yet fresh as daisy, the Cubillo has an intriguing nose of damson plum and ripe red cherries, tobacco and nutmeg with a hint of vanilla and liquorice just adding a seductive sweetness. Dive in and it is silky smooth with the lightest touch of soft tannins and just bursting with fruit. The finish goes on and on. A truly stunning Crianza that shows you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy a special wine from a very famous producer. This will age for at least a decade but why wait.

More Info

To step back inside the López de Heredia winery is to step back in time. Founded in 1877, and little changed since, López de Heredia might not be quite the oldest winery in Rioja, but they are certainly the most tradition bound and least changed. You read a lot of marketing fluff about ‘family winemaking tradition’, but at López de Heredia, it’s real. Maria José López de Heredia and her winemaker sister, Mercedes, couldn’t care less about wine fashions. They've been producing wines in the style their great grandfather did, where their wines slumber in their deep cellars for many years before release.  The quest for perfection is of utmost importance, and no wine is released until it is ready.

FROM THE PRESS

“The 2016 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza was surprising, spectacular, elegant, clean and fresh like few vintages before. It was a superb year, with quality, quantity and freshness. It's quite the opposite from the previous 2015, which was a much warmer and riper year. The 2016s have moderate alcohol and especially the perception of less ripeness (even though the alcohol is very similar). It feels very young, still quite primary. Mercedes explained, "Cubillas, a 24-hectare plot, is a vineyard that could produce Gran Reserva wines. It's a very good vineyard, but we would miss the Crianza in our range". In fact, the comment was that this vintage is even a challenge for the Viña Tondonia red "because of its price." It is indeed a bargain. "But it doesn't have the finesse of Tondonia," concluded María José. Anyway, it's super tasty. Drink 2024 - 2032”
Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Febraury 2024)
“The 2016 Crianza Viña Cubillo, from Haro in Rioja Alta, underwent a three-year aging process in used oak barrels. Garnet in color, the wine reveals enticing notes of cherry marmalade, complemented by herbal, mint-like hints. Dry, intense and fairly grippy, the 2016 also features a mild chalky texture. Firm and juicy with a vibrant core, it presents itself as a flavorful red in its primary state. I anticipate that further bottle-aging will unlock deeper complexities, and I look forward to revisiting it in the years to come. Drink 2024 - 2032”
