Tasting Notes
From brilliant winemaker Gottfried Mocke - Tim Atkin MW's Winemaker of the Year 2021: "Intense blackberry, bramble, and lavender aromas with gentle nuances of potting soil and cured meat dominate a dark and brooding nose. The abundance of perfume and the earthy character of the nose follows through generously onto a powerful palate, with a lush compote of blueberries, ripe plums, black currants & cherries. Cacao-powdery tannins are abundant, adding texture and complexity to an almost savoury mid-palate, seamlessly complementing the vivid dark fruits, alcohol and acidity. This is a robust, structured wine, yet it is delicate, poised and elegant at the same time. Black fruits, cumin spice, white pepper, liquorice and hints of garrigue persist on a velvety finish."

The combination of fruit now available to the Chocolate Block winemaker, our old friend Gottfried Mocke (ex Chamonix, Franschhoek), from the excellent Porseleinberg and Goldmine vineyards in the Swartland, that owner, Marc Kent, had the vision to buy and continue planting for their Boekenhoutskloof and Porseleinberg wines, makes it possible to make a wine better than they ever could in the past, despite so many lovely vintages having been made. Gottfried (named winemaker of the year in 2021 by Tim Atkin MW), has the sensitivity and ability to blend beautifully. I've not met many winemakers that I think have this level of skill.
