Tasting Notes

The 2022 is excellent. The vineyard sources of grapes are better than they've ever been. They're more mature now, and they've come through the drought years, and are producing the best grapes of their lives. We plan to ship it from the winery, and all being well, it should be here by late November, and in time to drink over the winter months. You can store it in your cellar/rack for longer, if you're drinking the 2021 or and older vintage now. But it's so reliable from the off."It takes a lot of talent - and good grapes - to make one million bottles of something this impressive. Using fruit from Goldmine, Porseleinberg and a block in Malmesbury, it's a seamless cuvée of Syrah with 26% Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. Polished, scented and glossy, with blueberry and blood orange flavours, fresh acidity, good structure and nuanced oak. 2023-30"

More Info

The combination of fruit now available to the Chocolate Block winemaker, our old friend Gottfried Mocke (ex Chamonix, Franschhoek), from the excellent Porseleinberg and Goldmine vineyards in the Swartland, that owner, Marc Kent, had the vision to buy and continue planting for their Boekenhoutskloof and Porseleinberg wines, makes it possible to make a wine better than they ever could in the past, despite so many lovely vintages having been made. Gottfried (named winemaker of the year in 2021 by Tim Atkin MW),has the sensitivity and ability to blend beautifully. I've not met many winemakers that I think have this level of skill.
