Tasting Notes

Only declared in the best vintages. Poised yet plush, the 2014 edition of Digby’s flagship fizz is driven by Chardonnay grown on greensand for energy, impact and extensive ageing potential. Vibrant, smoky Pinots and a hint of oak fermentation provide richness, roundness and texture. A carefully aged example of 2014’s beautifully ripe harvest.

More Info

One of England's most awarded wineries, as made by the brilliant Dermot Sugrue. Named after Sir Kenelm Digby, the polymath and inventor of the first strong glass that made it possible to bottle sparkling wine, Digby was established by founders Jason Humphries and Trevor Clough after they took a life-affirming trip to the Napa Valley to escape the grind of London corporate life. After talking to top producers around the world, they opted to buy grapes from the best vineyards rather than settle on one vineyard site, establishing contracts and relationships with quality-obsessed growers across a diverse range soil types across the southeast: chalk, greensand and clay soil sites. It's given them the flexibility ever since to make blends that represent the very best vineyards in England.

FROM THE PRESS

“95 points - The 2014 Brut Vintage Reserve, a blend of 62% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Noir and 17% Pinot Meunier from Hampshire, Dorset, Kent and Sussex, is superb. With 12% of the base wines fermented in used oak barrels and only the Chardonnay undergoing full malolactic conversion, it spent just over seven years on lees. Its bright, understated nose defies its ten-year age, remaining youthful with a touch of custard revealing itself upon swirling. The palate offers creamy yellow fruit edged with ripe lemon on a smooth yet lively mousse. As you savor it, the deep-running lemon purity becomes more apparent. This wine is long, elegant, balanced and simply wonderful. Disgorged: January 2024.”
