Tasting Notes

"This is an estate to watch", writes A. Galloni. A lot of Bolgheri wines are four square - very pleasant and delicious but they can be a bit beefy and obvious - and it's just a handful of producers that are really making the very best. But of that handful, Michele Satta, who planted the Ornellaia vineyards and was a consultant to them back in the day, is rare in using a touch of Sangiovese in the blend, bringing a certain finesse and high note to the wine.  A. Galloni in Vinous.com, writes, "I was very impressed with these wines from Michele Satta, not just the wines themselves, but because of the more contemporary approach son Giacomo Satta has taken since assuming full control of production in 2019. Today's wines have a bit more vibrancy and delineation than those of the past, which is great to see. This is an estate to watch."

More Info

Michele Satta is born of Sardinian origins, but it was his move to Tuscany during university that bedded him into the region, studying agriculture and very much being a man of the farm first and foremost. He began just before Bolgheri DOC was established, and very much grew and thrived, as the DOC itself did. As he established himself, vineyards and cellars he once rented, he was able to buy. Crafting unique, barrel aged cuvee's and blends, the name and reputation grew, aided by his wife since the beginning and now with 2 of his children working with him.

FROM THE PRESS

“50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 13% Sangiovese and for the first time 7% Cabernet Franc. Harvest in September. Two weeks’ maceration. Aged for 18 months in 225-litre barriques. Transparent ruby. Complex, distinctive nose. Sweet, very lifted, transparent, distinctive palate too! The small Sangiovese element is tastable. Quite floral and forward but an attractive drink that’s very appetising. ”
17/20, Jancis Robinson
“Refined and poised, Piastraia is always a pleasure to taste. A dense, ripe core of salted plum and spices with a slightly creamy undertone are surrounded by layers of energetic red and black berries and floral lift. Structural elements give shape without standing in the way, and some woody notes suggest it needs a bit more time to fully harmonise. A solid buy.”
