Tasting Notes

From two very special vineyards, one planted in 1951 and the other between 1888 to 1912 all of which are from the highly regarded Hoffman family property, which supplies a bevy of cult producers in the region, including Sami-Odi. It sports a lovely violet note upfront with the merest hint of dark chocolate and candied peel - such softness and charm. The palate lingers with a little more ruggedness - bitter chocolate drops, iron ore, graphite and a little gamey-savoury note, and lavender to soften. A powerful, but precise tannic structure wraps around its brooding black-fruited palate. Deep and concentrated and so lovely. Less than 2,000 bottles made. Drink 2026-2038.

More Info

Callum Powell has learnt from the best when it comes to Syrah. He practically grew up at the powerhouse that is Torbreck, the Barossa winery his father co-founded. He went on to make wine with his dad under the label Powell & Sons working with prime Barossa sites which gained him much international attention. But he cites the year at Jean-Louis Chave in the Northern Rhone, one of THE top producers of Hermitage and St Joseph as the most formative in honing and learning his craft. It's here that he began to understand the true provenance and terroir through the diversity of the 7 different lieux-dits that Chave farms.Influenced by Chave, Callum opted to name his wines after the towns from which the fruit is sourced. Please note! These are not Torbreck-styled over-oaked power houses - these are lithe, pure, and unadulterated wines without the heavy oak influence that the region is known for. There's a certain sinew to them and a nervy youth and chalkiness to the tannins. The feedback so far from just a few sommeliers has been out of this world and with some blinding recent reviews from the Wine Advocate, we're thrilled to have these wines available.

FROM THE PRESS

“Made from the famed Hoffman Dallwitz and Dimchurch old blocks that were planted in 1880 and 1951. Perfumed and densely packed aromas of blackberries, blueberries, red apple skin, tar, spices, cured meat, dark cherries, violets and dark chocolate. The palate is seamlessly intertwined, with dark, spicy fruit, finely grained tannins and a velvety texture. There is much to like, with some Old World charm and rusticity from 100% whole-cluster fermentation. A wine to age for decades. Drink or hold.”
97 points, James Suckling
“This is potent and rich, a kind of rustic charm to it all, yet levity and relaxed feel too. Strength exists in dusty tannins that wrap woody spices, sweet spices, toasty notes and a lavish array of ripe raspberry, dark plum, currants and choc-cherry. Lush, yet tension too. There’s a pleasing thickness here yet a lift as well. It’s really spice-laden is the message, I just feel that needs repeating, and geez, overall, it’s really interesting and good in that regard. Individual. Alongside, texture does plush, somewhat chewy, a dusty and clove-spiked profile lingering. A textural heaven! Sheesh, so much going on here. A feast! It’s great.”
