Lavacchio (la-vack-eeo) are next to the famous Frescobaldi, whose Sangiovese wines Montesodi and Momoreto sell at £44 and £80 a pop. Frescobaldi have very much gone down the luxury goods route of pricing. I bought a couple of bottles this summer when I visited and tried them alongside the wines of Lavacchio and thought they tasted very much like they'd been made like painting by numbers, and somehow left the sense of place behind. That's compared with these two wines which are really outstanding with qualities that make you yearn to be there and makes you think, yes, I'm so glad I am drinking this. Both wines are very impressive.
